Gear pump consists of two gears, pump body and front and back cover composed of two closed Spaces, when the gear rotates, the volume of the space on the side of the gear off from small to large, forming a vacuum, the liquid is inhaled, the volume of the space on the gear meshing side from large to small, and the liquid is squeezed into the pipeline. The suction cavity and the discharge cavity are separated by the meshing lines of the two gears. The pressure at the outlet of the gear pump depends entirely on the resistance at the pump outlet. Gear pump is widely used in various Marine hydraulic machinery. It has the advantages of simple and compact structure, small size, light weight, good self-priming performance, insensitivity to dirt, reliable operation, long service life, high speed and easy management and maintenance, but the flow and pressure pulsation is large, noise is large, and the displacement is not adjustable. There are many kinds of gear pumps, common involute external gear pump, involute internal gear pump and cycloidal internal gear pump. In addition to being used as power components in hydraulic drive systems, they are often used as transport pumps for various oils.

For fluids whose viscosity or density varies during the process, the pump is not much affected. If there is a damper, such as a filter or a limiter on the side of the discharge outlet, the pump will push the fluid through them. If this damper changes during operation, that is, if the screen becomes dirty, clogged, or the back pressure of the limiter increases, the pump will maintain a constant flow until the mechanical limit of the weakest part of the device is reached (usually with a torque limiter).
The speed of a pump is actually limited, depending on the process fluid. If oil is delivered, the pump can turn at a very high speed, but when the fluid is a high viscosity polymer melt, this limit is greatly increased.
